Background

Sonia Sotomayor has served as an Associate Justice since August 2009, and is the first Hispanic and first Latina member of the Supreme Court. She previously served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and earlier as an assistant district attorney in New York County. Raised in the Bronx, she graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and earned her law degree from Yale Law School.
