Background

Michael A. Chagares has served as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit since December 4, 2021. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he joined the court in 2006 and was confirmed by a 98-0 Senate vote. Chagares previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, rising to chief of the Civil Division. He is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Seton Hall University School of Law.
