Background

Mary H. Murguia has served as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit since December 1, 2021, the first Latina to lead the circuit. Appointed by President Barack Obama, she joined the court in 2011 after serving as a U.S. district judge in Arizona, confirmed 89-0. Murguia previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney and as director of the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys. She earned her bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Kansas.
