Background

Jeffrey S. Sutton served as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from May 1, 2021 until taking senior status effective October 1, 2026. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he joined the court in 2003 and previously served as Solicitor General of Ohio. Sutton is a noted writer on state constitutional law and an adjunct professor at Ohio State's Moritz College of Law. He is a graduate of Williams College and the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
