Background

Albert Diaz has served as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit since July 9, 2023, the first Hispanic judge to serve on the court. Appointed by President Barack Obama, he received his commission in December 2010. Diaz previously served as a North Carolina state superior court judge and as a judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps. He holds degrees from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, New York University School of Law, and Boston University.
