Background

Howard Lutnick, the longtime chairman and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, became commerce secretary in February 2025 after a 51-45 confirmation. He led Cantor Fitzgerald through the September 11 attacks, in which the firm lost 658 employees including his brother. He co-chaired Donald Trump's 2024 presidential transition team.
